Grow Up by Renacido Grow Up by Renacido
When I was younger I would get asked that question a lot 'Do you want to be an artist when you grow up?'. I still get asked that now. Well, here's my response.

You're welcome anyone else who gets asked this, k, alright then. Brought to you by my handwriting in uppercase.

I don't want to grow up to be an artist, I want to grow up to be recognized as one.

Although I don't question if YOU are an artist, I reckon this quote as false, because no person can actually regard themselves as an artist. We cannot define what "art" is (well, we can, but there are too many definitions), so we also cannot define who an "artist" is. If, for example, a 5 year old child would call themselves as an artist, would that be true or false? He or she can have some artistic idea which they cannot express yet OR they draw beautiful pieces without any hidden meaning. Sometimes looking at modern pieces of "art" proves that not only the meaning is important, but also the form - (i.e. a starving dog at the museum is cruelty, not art). Therefore I believe it's impossible to judge objectively or say about oneself that one is "an artist".

To me it's simple. You can't be an artist, you can sometimes be an artist. Art is when a certain things mix together to create it. It's talent, creativity, craftsmanship, quality, luck (including accident and/or mistake). Piece of art is when a piece of craftsmanship levels up cause those ingredients mix together in a way it's perfect, you can't imagine it any other way, it could not be any other way. You don't create it. It's there waiting somewhere there, you simply just find it. Simply but not easily :P
Since I remember being an artist means being a useless, pretentious parasite with only one talent- being cheeky persuasive they have any talent.
That's why after being predicted to become an artist many times I decided to be just a cartoonist. Way more fun.

I think you may be reading too much into it, I get what you're saying here, and art takes many forms, yes. That's part of why I left the field so open to interpretation 'creativity knows no age or definite medium' of expressing one's self etc etc.
Still an interesting thought though. :)

I tend to agree for the most part. Respectfully, I do not agree with the statement being made here.

Being an artist is not the same as being creative, being creative does not make you any more an artist than being logical makes you an engineer. It's something you obtain only via dedicated study and concentrated time and effort. Being an artist is not just having ideas, but being able to understand and materialize them in a cohesive way.

Maybe they meant to ask whether you would like to make money with your art once you "grow up". . - .

I could stare at this for hours, thinking of all the possible thoughts that could arise from such a simple expression. It's a very powerful message to people who are true artists. I was asked this before, but it occurs to me that I've always been an artist I guess. *pats chest* It get's you right there.

Thank you! I was actually just thinking about the question earlier. My friend had asked me what plans I had for my art in the future earlier today, and the conversation sparked some brain motion(it's amazing how that happens).

I find that "growing up" in its most common meaning is killing my artistic side and making me cynical. Anyone who knows the road to Neverland?

Growing up is a weird thing, but I agree with you about the artistic side thing. Around here - growing up is usually faced as something much less vibrant than 'youth' - however you want to classify that. I get mistaken for someone in secondary school often since I carry myself in a bubbly manner. But with all that said, hang onto what inspires you and your creative outlets. :)

Yeah, that happens to me as well xD which is quite funny to be honest. And thank you for the advice :) I'll most certainly try to! After all as Albert Einstein said:

“It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure.”
